General Contractors Los Angeles

Just another WordPress weblog

The word ‘contractor’ applies to many types of construction and home repair-related businesses. These can include structural construction, such as home additions, concrete foundations or patios, and wooden deck construction. There are also sub-contractors who focus on specific tasks, like plumbing and electrical work.

In Los Angeles, most general contractors are licensed. The most important factor in hiring anyone to work for you is qualification. If a contractor cannot show you a license, move on! They should always be able to provide you with one. Also it is a good idea to check references. Sites such as AngiesList.com are great resources to get unbiased reviews from former customers. While it is possible to hire someone without a license, it is dangerous – if issues arise, people who are not licensed by the state are often let off the hook because it was “buyer beware” to hire them!

Before a general contractor is hired, and after you are determined that the contractor is licensed, there are several more important question that need to be asked. Ask if they carry general liability and workers compensation insurance and get proof of both, to protect both your property and money while the contractor is working for you. Also be sure to ask if the contractor will get all required building permits for the job. If a contractor asks that the homeowner get the permits, this can be a red flag because they may be either unlicensed or the work is outside of their licensed abilities. A reputable contractor will obtain a permit for every job where a permit is required without whining or asking you to do it for them. Also it is a good idea to find out if contractors will try to keep dirt and dust reasonably contained (it can get everywhere) and whether they will clean up the area when they finish or if you will have to perform that task.

One very popular company for Los Angeles in located in Sun Valley, California – Tower General Contractors. This company is a member of the U. S. Green Building Council and is focused on protecting the environment while they work, and have worked on projects including national landmarks and historical renovations. With California having some of the strictest environmental standards in the country, green construction is no longer considered ‘cutting edge’ in the Los Angeles area – it is the norm.
